Chapter Fourteen

The only time Cheyenne slowed down on her way back up through the city levels toward the fortress was to manually program four doorways to open and, in one case, manually pry an unresponsive door apart at the seams. Her activator came through in finding the path least traveled by the lower-level citizens, and she didn’t have any more run-ins with magicals who blamed her for the power outage.

Her drow entourage was just as open to conversation as she was, so it was a silent trek back through Hangivol. When they reached the inner circle, the main avenue was livelier than when they’d left it, groups of drow gathered in tight circles for discussion. Some of them had drawn out chairs and tables and arranged them with views of the fortress.

Like they’re setting up to watch a concert. What do they think is gonna happen?

Before she reached the shredded side door in the fortress wall, she stopped. “Look, I get that you guys wanted to make yourselves useful or whatever, but now it’s seriously time to…” She spun to face her drow escort, but they were gone. “Look before you open your mouth, Cheyenne.”

She scanned the avenue, which was slowly filling with more drow joining the remarkably dull party. Glís stood at a table outside a storefront with a tight smile and raised a metal cup to her lips before glancing at Cheyenne. Haslin and Ban’oru were already deeply engaged in a knife-throwing contest with two others, the blades sticking with sharp metallic rings into the side of their target, an empty grog barrel. Althas stood two doors down from the knife-throwers, his hand propped on the door beside him as two drow women spoke to him in low tones. He stared at Cheyenne so intensely that the drow women turned to eye her as well.

Cheyenne ran a hand through her hair and nodded at him. Althas dipped his head, then returned to his previous conversation. Okay, maybe they do know when to call off unnecessary guard duty. Just gotta work on when not to pick fights with the locals or insist on calling me the Crown.

She slipped through the shredded side door and made her way through the twisting corridors of the fortress toward Persh’al’s quarters. The large double doors were propped open when she reached them.

“Pull!” Byrd shouted.

A silver cup launched across the receiving room and was blasted away by an ensuing burst of green light.

“Damn. You weren’t fuckin’ around.”

“Told ya. Anyone who says you need two eyes for depth perception is full of shit.”

“Yeah, but you have two eyes.”

“I covered one of them.”

Cheyenne cleared her throat.

The goblins jumped and spun toward her.

“Shit, Cheyenne.” Byrd chuckled and rubbed his bald head. “Didn’t see you come in.”

“So your peripheral vision’s shit, huh?” Lumil slapped his chest with the back of a hand and turned toward the sitting area. “Good to know.”

He hurried after her. “There’s nothing wrong with my peripheral vision. I was focused!”

Maleshi snatched a newly opened bottle of Bloodshine off the table before Lumil could grab it.
